Makinohara’s Digital Horizon: Crafting Infrastructure and Innovation Before the World Arrives
In collaboration with Dia Inc. and the Makinohara municipal government, Akiyaz is spearheading one of our most ambitious projects yet. With the opening of a new Shinkansen station at the international airport nearby projected for 2028, Makinohara stands on the cusp of dramatic transformation. Our mission: uncover latent opportunities in infrastructure, commerce, and cultural development — and help position Makinohara as a modern, globally connected town that honors its roots while embracing the future.
Blending expertise from media production, operational consulting, and resource repurposing, we are building a blueprint for a vibrant digital ecosystem that leverages local strengths, particularly green tea innovation, in ways few have imagined. Makinohara will not only survive the coming influx of attention — it will lead the way in showing how rural innovation can be both deeply local and dynamically global.
Why Makinohara?
Known for its sprawling tea fields and deep cultural heritage, Makinohara is ideally positioned to capitalize on new transportation links and global traffic. Yet, without intentional planning, many rural towns simply buckle under such change. Our proactive approach ensures Makinohara evolves with strength and purpose — expanding its identity through new business models, cultural products, and technology adoption, rather than losing itself in the tide of modernization.
By initiating groundwork now, before the Shinkansen arrival, Makinohara can set a model for how regional Japan can transition into the new era without sacrificing what makes it special.
Project Components
Media Production for Cultural Storytelling
Building on our experience in Minakami, we are creating vivid, modern media assets that elevate Makinohara’s identity for both domestic and international audiences. Our focus includes:
- High-quality video and photo campaigns showcasing tea culture, local artisans, and landscapes
- AI-supported visual storytelling to reimagine traditional products for new markets
- Developing multimedia prototypes for future tourism, commerce, and educational initiatives
This content serves both promotional needs and deeper cultural preservation efforts, capturing Makinohara’s soul before mass changes arrive.
Operational Strategy and Infrastructure Advisory
Similar to our work in Yugawara, we are advising local stakeholders on operational improvements and infrastructure development plans, customized for the coming transportation boom. Key focus areas include:
- Identifying service gaps likely to appear post-Shinkansen opening
- Proposing public-private partnerships to strengthen core services without overburdening the town budget
- Establishing scalable models for digital tourism, remote work, and small-scale cultural experiences
These strategies ensure Makinohara is not overwhelmed by sudden growth, but rather positioned to guide and harness it intelligently.
Innovative Resource Repurposing and Product Development for Small Operators
Makinohara’s iconic green tea is a natural treasure — but traditional models of tea consumption are declining. Akiyaz is helping reimagine these resources by:
- Prototyping tea-based kombucha products aimed at health-conscious, younger markets
- Exploring beauty and wellness applications of tea in modern consumer goods
- Connecting agricultural producers to digital sales and storytelling platforms
This approach not only diversifies revenue streams but also infuses traditional industries with fresh relevance and resilience.
Broader Impact
Our work in Makinohara represents a holistic model for rural innovation in Japan. It demonstrates that with the right mixture of heritage respect, technological adaptation, and market creativity, small towns can become agile, competitive nodes in the global network — without losing their soul.
The lessons we learn here will inform future projects across Japan, showing that proactive engagement, not reactive scrambling, is the path forward for rural regions facing accelerating globalization.
Looking Ahead
Makinohara is not a one-off project. It’s a cornerstone of the evolving Akiyaz methodology: digital-first, culture-driven, rooted in place but reaching outward. We are deeply committed to building bridges between traditional Japan and the emerging digital economy — and Makinohara will stand as proof that rural areas are not relics, but vital frontiers of possibility.
If you believe in intelligent transformation, sustainable growth, and honoring heritage while forging new futures, Makinohara is a place to watch — and to join.
